Green peas (large blue peas) are the most popular type of dried pea grown in the UK, they are grown in a greater quantity than all the other types combined.
Green peas are used by a wide range of different customers, some of the finished products include:
- Canned mushy peas
- Pea cake
- Soups and sauces
- Casseroles
- Fried and roasted to produce a snack food
- Extruded for snack food
Green peas are more widely grown as their standing ability is better at the point of harvest; this improves ease of combining and makes them a farmer favourite.
Due to the above, coupled with increased yields over Marrowfat peas, these peas demand a lower premium and therefore are cheaper to the customer although the characteristics and appearance before and after cooking are not the same.
